Frequently Asked Questions...
|
Why did you start this? When my son Jeremy was in the hospital in Germany, he called and said he couldn't believe every half hour another bus full of wounded arrived usually wearing just the bloody torn clothes they were wounded in. They would be given a hospital gown or donated clothes but supplies of these items were running out. I thought we could make a difference back in the US by sending donations
Who runs the organization? Cheryl Lepsch is the immediate point of contact but volunteers from many organizations have stepped up to help. The Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary Commanders Roll of Honor #120, Joseph Shydlinski and Kathy Tedesco have been a large part of this organization helping when needed as well as working within those organization that have partnered up with us.
How do you know the items are handed out? Through our contacts we have learned many organizations send items to military hospitals directly and some of these items are sitting in storage because the staff doesn't have sufficient time to go through them or hand them out. We have also learned if a donation was sent to a particular branch that it might not get passed to other branches. Jammies for GIs works with individuals who we know will see to it that the items are immediately distributed. We work with Chaplains, individual medical staff as well as Family assistance centers. The need is so great that these individuals contact me will often contact us with specific needs. We make sure that nothing sits in storage.
How do the items get delivered? Speed Transportation out of Kenmore NY delivers our larger pallets to hospitals around the US in cities they frequent free of charge. We also send thousands of boxes via the US Postal as well as UPS. Volunteers also take items with them to hand deliver when they visit the hospitals.
Doesn't the Military supply these items? The Military provides the basic necessities when a person arrives but not while in rehab. The GIs are left on their own to supply needed items. Most receive a single warm up suit while they wait for their personal effects to arrive from their units. Many of the injured have no way for family to send items because they don't have addresses. They must spend what little money they have to purchase needed items or go without. Many have to pay their own cab fair to receive medical treatments.
Do you limit what a person can receive? Absolutely not. If they need 5 pairs of socks that is what they receive. We also do not make anyone sign for any of the items.
Do you receive any Government funding? No, Jammies For GIs is funded entirely from donations.
Are you 501(c) (3)status? Not at this time but are in the process of filing.
Can an individual soldier or family contact you for help? Absolutely. We will help any one who asks.
Is there items that are needed more than others? Clothing items are always the most important. We ask that you send only new items, however, the hospitals will not accept used clothing.
