Schramm died as a result of enemy action Babil Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.

In Honor of his heroism the song "WHEN A SOLDIER SAYS GOODBYE" was written by Ken Rex, a family friend, "When a Soldier Says Goodbye" was inspired by Brian and dedicated to ALL OF OUR FALLEN HEROES!
